James Murphy is our generations David Byrne - this may seem obvious but those dots hadn’t previously been connected and it was pointed out to us over the weekend. LCD called it a day with 5 sell out shows in New York (their spiritual home) after 3 albums, several seminal and generation defining anthems and more columns inches than any other electronica band of the last decade.

In 2006 James Murphy sat down with Brain Pickings and spoke for 30 minutes on technology, the role of tastemakers, record stores, recommendation filters and the future of taste.

“What’s going to be missing is the unconscious peer pressure that guides people into different forms of taste. What it’s gonna be replaced by is lifestyle marketing and taste engines, which scares the crap out of me.”

It’s almost an epidemic in some circles: Trying or caring is somehow haughty. Simply capturing a vibe or a mood is preferred instead. But that’s what marketing does; it’s not what music is supposed to do. This sort of cowardice— choosing fitting-in over standing out— isn’t something James Murphy takes lightly. LCD Soundsystem never cared for doing things half-ass and using nonchalance as a substitute for really putting yourself out there.”

Today, digital label BEKO released the Skeletal System frontman’s three-song solo EP, which you can download for free (like always). These impressive electronic compositions feature collaborations with Alejandro Archuleta (Psychic Handbook), Kevin Dedes (Ferns), and Trevor Hacker (Sunbeam Rd.).

Announcing City Limits Records: A Project by Ears of the Beholder and See the Leaves

My friend Robert and I met several weeks ago to discuss local music and community building, following an inspiring tip from our buddy Andy of Skeletal System. What emerged from this discussion eventually became known as City Limits Records. This will not be just another record label, but a series of exclusive compilations intended to help promote our local music scene and eventually those of other cities as well. Over time, we hope to build a catalog of collectable 12” vinyl time capsules representing the diverse creative energy of many musically rich communities across the map.
