The Quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama
The quilt above was made by Sue Willie Seltzer, born 1922, and is entilted “Housetop” — nine-block “Half-Logcabin” variation, made around 1955 of cotton and sythetic blends. 80 x 76 inches.
The Gee’s Bend quilters make some of the most beautiful quilts I’ve ever seen (more here) — they go beyond being merely just works of modern art or just functional blankets — and are something wildly transcendent, almost musical, even.
